Lin and Wang liken it to a liquid form of the cucumber salad one might find in a Chinese restaurant. Pham found inspiration for the drink while traveling to New York and discovering a sesame oil-tinged cocktail at Double Chicken Please. “Our Far Eastside cocktail speaks a lot to what we want to do, which is use Asian ingredients that aren’t always seen in cocktails,” says Wang. On an early evening in Steep’s courtyard in Chinatown’s Mandarin Plaza, the atmosphere is lively but not raucous. Diners chat while sipping on cocktails made with tea-infused spirits and snacking on Asian bar bites like dried shiitake mushrooms and crispy sakura shrimp.

The complete construction of a tea house may be reduced to only three tatami mats. It comprises a full tatami mat for the guests and a daime (台目), 3/4 the length of a full tatami mat, for the host. I was so busy sampling the drinks that I actually didn't get a chance to taste the Thai tea soft serve. But my Thai husband and children assured me that it was also incredibly yummy.

However, Kyoto's elites enjoyed tea competitions and refined gatherings with high quality utensils, elegant clothes, and sumptuous decorations. Since then, these two expressions of the tea ceremony practice remained complementary. They were carried out in traditional rooms of a noble residence or in a small pavilion intended for entertainment. Cha Tra Mue is one of the premier manufacturers of Thai tea in Thailand. Their Thai tea mix is a bestseller, allowing you to make your own Thai Iced Tea at home.

It wasn't quite as sweet as I was expecting it to be, so the bitterness of the tea was fairly prominent. The Thai Boba Tea was sweeter, probably because of the brown sugar boba, and more in line with what I was expecting in terms of sweetness. Regardless, both of the Thai teas were an absolute treat, and brought me back to Thailand with the first sip. When it was our turn to order, we decided to try their original Thai Iced Tea, a Thai Tea with boba, Thai coffee, and the Milk Green Tea. We also got a Thai Tea soft serve ice cream, because, well, how could you not? We went with 100% sweetness (regular sweet) for all of our teas, although they offer a range from 0% (not sweet) to 130% (extra sweet).

The book’s profits are donated to the arts program at Chinatown’s Castelar Elementary School and East Wind Foundation, a nonprofit that helps preserve Chinese cultural heritage among local youth. In March 2021, Steep organized a charity sale in Mandarin Plaza and raised $18,000 for nonprofits Stop AAPI Hate and Asian Americans Advancing Justice Southern California. If you do not own one, business casual attire with clean white socks is preferred. Jeans are discouraged due to possible damage to the tatami surface. Women may wear a skirt or dress as long as the length covers the knees when sitting.

Blinken says Israel must still do more to boost humanitarian aid to Gaza

In English, we often make a distinction between a free-standing construction for tea, referred to as tea house, and a tea ceremony room within a building. Tea rooms may also be situated within larger tea houses, or within private homes or other structures not aimed for tea ceremony. What is the most important aspect of the Japanese tea ceremony? You might think the tea, but perhaps even more influential is the setting.

Biltmore Los Angeles

At Yusuian, there are weekly classes in Chado where students can learn the fundamental principles of traditional Japanese tea ceremony and practice Temae. The drinks were made to order, and came in fancy reusable plastic tumblers with the Cha Tra Mue logo printed on them. Each cup was filled to the brim with crushed ice, and the drinks were poured on top. An informational poster at the register explained that a cup full of ice is crucial, as Thai tea is very concentrated and traditionally served sweet.

Wooden buildings of small dimensions, chashitsu are located in the gardens or grounds of private Japanese homes, in parks, museums or temples. All of the teas were between $5.50 and $6.00 each, depending on which menu item you chose. The soft serve ice creams were $4.75, and the Thai tea float was $6.00.

On explicit orders from Biden, White House officials also avoided directly attacking Johnson over the stalled aid — a directive the president repeatedly instilled in his senior staff. At the time, the House was in chaos because the Republican majority had been unable to select a speaker to replace Rep. Kevin McCarthy of Bakersfield, who had been removed more than two weeks earlier. McCarthy’s ouster by the GOP’s far right came after he agreed earlier to allow federal spending levels that many far-right House Republicans disagreed with and wanted undone.

It also means that people of any social status or rank have to bend and crawl in through the small door to enter. This has to be done on all-fours, on clenched fists, sliding on the knees. It implies a tea room, where the guests are welcomed, or a room and its surrounding facilities, including the garden path leading to it.

(In particular, we found the aged goat cheese and chive scone to be outstanding.) For $20 more, guests can also indulge in bottomless champagne. Priced at $95 per person, afternoon high tea service takes place in the hotel’s Library and Ocean Terrace every Saturday and Sunday at noon and 3 p.m. Chef Damon Gordon’s menu balances old and new traditions, with crab, cucumber, and smoked salmon sandwiches; profiteroles with chocolate and sea salt caramel; and traditional scones with clotted cream, lemon curd, and house-made preserves. Reservations are required via Fairmont Miramar’s website or Resy. Pasadena’s understated Callisto Tea House serves two options for afternoon tea service on Saturdays and Sundays from 10 a.m.

Their tea mixes were available for purchase, but the main draw was, of course, their freshly made drink offerings. Cognizant of Chinatown’s changing dynamics, Lin and Wang give back to the community in several ways. Wang, who is a graphic designer, published a Chinatown guidebook called Chart in August that highlights new and legacy businesses as a way to increase foot traffic to the neighborhood; the book contains both English and Chinese descriptions.

After all, it is the chashitsu or tea house that provides the serene atmosphere, and the very sense of ceremony itself. Steep After Dark or SAD (the acronym is a tongue-in-cheek nod to happy hour) was initially launched as a pandemic pop-up by Steep’s owners Samuel Wang and Lydia Lin in August 2020. It became a permanent nighttime fixture in summer 2022 when a liquor license was secured. While tea-infused cocktails appear on some bar menus around town, including at the now-closed In Sheep’s Clothing, SAD’s dedicated menu is like no other in Los Angeles right now. Additionally, the hotel is hosting a weekends-only “tea party” on the Belvedere Terrace every Saturday and Sunday featuring a DJ, eclectic and antique China and glassware, floral-themed cocktails, tea sandwiches, and more. A traditional Japanese tea house is usually surrounded by a garden named roji (露地, dewy ground).

One of the most important areas in the tea room is the tokonoma (床の間, scroll alcove) where a scroll of calligraphy or a brush painting is hung. A flower arrangement named chabana (茶花, tea flowers) is often placed in the tokonoma. Guests are seated next to the tokonoma, the first guest being the closest to the alcove. When we arrived last Saturday morning, the Tea House was packed with Thai people. The line moved fairly quickly, however, and as we were leaving, more non-Thai folks began to arrive. There were three tables at the front of the shop and several comfy seats with coffee tables on the side of the shop.

People produced Mexican textiles and fabric inside workshops or even at home before the Porfirio Diaz era in the early 1900s when weaving mechanization started. From that moment on, clothing was almost exclusively produced in factories. One of the major exceptions was the handcrafted indigenous Mexican textiles and embroideries. There is so much hard work and dedication behind these stitches. Because of location/climate, Mexico has quite an abundance of flowers. Besides the ever popular marigold, one of the more prominent flowers that you will see in Mexican design is the dahlia.

road house 1989

Directed by Doug Liman, the upcoming “Road House” movie is based on the ‘80s cult classic of the same name starring Patrick Swayze as a bar bouncer with a violent past. Daniela Melchior and Billy Magnussen are also among the cast of the “Road House” revival. This movie is so top-heavy with plot, it can even afford to ignore some obvious possibilities. Of course, in a town with two residences, there may not be much pent-up housing demand. Whether you're a nostalgic fan or just curious to see the remake on its own terms, expect gripping action and gritty drama that made the original a cult classic.

Garrett attempts to calm Dalton, trying to assuage his guilt about killing in self-defense and his frustration at being unable to end Wesley's campaign. Elizabeth also tries to dissuade Dalton from continuing before Emmett's home is blown up by Wesley's henchman Jimmy Reno. Although Emmett is saved, the enraged Dalton fights Reno and rips his throat out, much to Elizabeth's shock and disgust. Wesley's nephew Pat, who is one of the fired employees, intimidates Tilghman into giving him his job back and attacks Dalton, who badly injures Pat and his accomplices.

Receiving a knife wound in the process, Dalton visits a hospital and befriends Dr. Elizabeth Clay to whom Wesley is also attracted. Dalton refuses and Wesley uses his connections to prevent the Double Deuce from purchasing alcohol from any suppliers.

We are expected to believe that the sadist financed these hunting expeditions by shaking down the businesmen in a town that, on the visible evidence, contains a bar, a general store, a Ford dealership and two residences. "Road House" is the kind of movie that leaves reality so far behind that you have to accept it on its own terms. The guiding spirit of "Road House" can be glimpsed in one particular scene, which is set in the trophy room of an evil sadist who holds a helpless town in his iron grasp. His hunting trophies include not only the usual deer and elk and antelopes, but also orangutans, llamas and a matched set of tropical monkeys. Whether Road House is simply bad or so bad it's good depends largely on the audience's fondness for Swayze -- and tolerance for violently cheesy action. While nobody can quite fill Patrick Swayze's shoes, the remake boasts an impressive lineup of talented actors. Rentals last 30 days and you'll have a 48-hour streaming window once you hit play, so there's more than enough time to dive into the original. After premiering at the SXSW film festival, Doug Liman's reboot of Road House is available to stream and brings a modern twist to the Eighties classic, which starred the late Patrick Swayze. Here's everything you need to know, from where to catch the Road House remake to where you can revisit the original, plus a look at the stellar cast. Gyllenhaal and Hieron also faced off in the ring, pretending to dodge and pummel each other as the director called out cues and the audience went wild.

Read on for all you need to know about the remake of Road House, including where you can watch it, as well as the original. Rewatching Road House isn't just a snort of nostalgia from a time when cocaine was more prevalent in bathrooms than hand sanitizer. Herrington sells this collection of broad violence (including a monster truck attack!) and fuming goobers with determination, putting in the effort to turn this 1989 release into the finest drive-in film of the 1970s. The Jeff Healey Band provides much of the movie's soundtrack, playing all through it. You can watch the original 1989 film on streaming, with a subscription to Max or Prime Video.

road house 1989

"Road House" exists right on the edge between the "good-bad movie" and the merely bad. I hesitate to recommend it, because so much depends on the ironic vision of the viewer. "Road House" is said to be based on an actual case in Missouri where the local bad guy, universally hated by everyone in town, was murdered in broad daylight - and no one in town seems to have seen a thing. If that is the genesis for the story, everything else in it seems to have come from a cheerful willingness to go over the top in every way possible.

Road House (1989 film)

Another clip from the event shows a camera crew following Gyllenhaal as he strutted into the arena wearing UFC warm-up gear. This gloriously brainless modern-day western is a treat from start to finish, and possibly the one and only time that a bouncer will ever get the full Hollywood hero treatment. He is hired by Frank Tilghman (Kevin Tighe) to clean up his Double Deuce Road House down in Jasper, Missouri. A rough drunken and bloody place, the Double Deuce is just the start of Dalton's problems as he falls foul of town despot Brad Wesley (Ben Gazzara).

In the Family Guy season 8 episode "Brian's Got a Brand New Bag", Peter Griffin purchases a DVD copy of Road House for a dollar at a closing video store. After watching the film, he decides that the only way to solve every problem is by roundhouse kicking everything in sight including his family. The episode was dedicated in memory of Swayze, who died of pancreatic cancer on September 14, 2009.[36] Since the episode, Peter kicking people has since became a gag in the show. Later, Wesley contacts Dalton threatening that either Elizabeth or Garrett will die. Garrett is attacked, but fights off his assailants and comes to Double Deuce, while Dalton checks on Elizabeth, who is safe but unwilling to talk to Dalton any further.

While filming a weigh-in scene, Gyllenhaal flexed his muscles for the audience and got into a scripted, physical altercation with Hieron, who plays his rival in the action flick. Footage from the event shows Gyllenhaal staring down and swatting at Hieron as part of the intense sequence. The Double Deuce is the meanest, loudest and rowdiest bar south of the Mason-Dixon Line, and Dalton has been hired to clean it up. He might not look like much, but the Ph.D.-educated bouncer proves he's more than capable – busting the heads of troublemakers and turning the roadhouse into a jumping hot spot. But Dalton's romance with the gorgeous Dr. Clay puts him on the bad side of cutthroat local big shot Brad Wesley.

Although stoic and cool-headed, Dalton is tormented by memories of a man he killed in self-defense by ripping out his throat. Frank Tilghman, a businessman, recruits Dalton to take over security at his club "Double Deuce" in Jasper, Missouri. Tilghman plans to invest substantial funds into the dilapidated club and needs Dalton's highly regarded skills to tackle the endemic violence and rough customers. Dalton agrees in exchange for full authority over the club's operations, immediately firing several employees for poor behavior, theft, and drug dealing.

Distraught, Dalton storms Wesley's estate, kills most of his henchmen and defeats, but relents from killing Wesley, refusing to give in to his anger. Elizabeth arrives and reconciles with Dalton, but Wesley recovers and attempts to shoot him before being shot dead by the locals, including Emmett and Red. Sometime later, the modernized and refined Double Deuce bustles with customers while Dalton and Elizabeth swim together in a lake. One evening, the auto shop adjacent to the Double Deuce — owned by Elizabeth's uncle Red Webster — is destroyed in an arson attack. After Dalton and the crowds return inside the Double Deuce, they find Wesley awaiting them. Wesley sabotages other businesses as the local owners discuss their futile efforts to stop him.

Dalton uses his own connections to secure some supplies and reunites with his mentor Wade Garrett, an aging bouncer. Wesley sends his men to destroy the Double Deuce's supplies, but Dalton and Garrett defeat them. James Dalton is a professional bouncer working security for a club in New York City.

These Stylish Rooms Prove Why Black Is This Years New Neutral

black wall design

A living room black accent wall adds depth and is a great way to add an intimate mood to your space. Creative approaches like wall paneling or a particular black color are key in transforming a black accent wall into a warm and inviting space rather than stark and unwelcoming. The real challenge lies in effectively incorporating a black accent wall into your home. Given its boldness and depth, black demands careful balancing with appropriate complementary hues, patterns, and decor to achieve a harmonious appearance.

What is a black accent wall?

Keep scrolling for 51 creative, design-forward black accent wall ideas that will turn heads in the best possible way. In fashion and interior design, there’s nothing cooler than a little edgy black. From a head-to-toe black outfit to a coat of black paint, this hue is modern, classic, and perennially on-trend, no matter the application. This gutsy mom painted over a wall she had lovingly hand-stenciled in order to create this adorable wall embellished with chalk renditions of all of her son's favorite things. This stunning black accent wall is painted in Caviar Black by Sherwin Williams. The rich color gives the wood even more dimension and visual impact as seen in this amazing bedroom painted with a black shiplap wall.

A well-chosen accent color, sparingly introduced through decor elements like throw pillows, artwork, or an accent chair, infuses vibrancy and dimension. This bold pop of color creates a striking contrast against the dark backdrop, drawing the eye and adding visual interest. It serves as a focal point within the room, accentuating the dramatic effect of the black wall.

Paint Your Bookshelves

Even though I have simplified my process on the greens, I tried my best to be mindful (no pun intended) of the pre-shot process and focus on the colors before tee shots and putts. As someone who plays fast and tries to keep the brain free of additional thoughts on the course, making sure the visual technology was visible on the tee and putting green took some getting used to. Native Leah Alexander founded her Atlanta-based practice, Beauty Is Abundant, three years ago. Recently, Alexander completed a six-home development in West Midtown Atlanta, and she is also working on a 1930s home renovation, among other projects. Jason Bolden and Adair Curtis, the married duo behind JSN Studio, channeled their shared point of view into a business venture that they launched together in 2014. Their multidisciplinary design firm, which specializes in interiors, staging, styling, and more, plays to their mutual strengths.

A good choice would be to furnish a forest-green room with mahogany furniture. The magic of dark walls is that they diminish the visual mismatch between pieces originating from different eras, and keep the place cohesive and elegant. In most scenarios, black looks the best applied on a single, accent wall. According to design experts, this should be either the wall framing the centerpiece of the room (the largest window, the couch, the fireplace), or the largest one. In settings like these, you can use a different, refreshing shade for the trim to provide the necessary contrast.

The selection of colors that complement each other can substantially affect the room's overall appearance and atmosphere. You should combine darker accent walls with lighter ones, or at least implement fresher patterns and architectural details to avoid a moody effect. We also recommend chair rails as wall dividers between a black top and a lighter bottom.

A black accent wall idea can elevate your interior design in several compelling ways. The color black, known for its air of mystery and sophistication, delivers a bold statement that instantly captures attention. It is a striking backdrop, emphasizing contrast and depth within a space.

Creating a captivating focal point is central to successful decorating with a black accent wall. This prominent element captures one's focus, establishing the ambiance for the entire area. I'm an interior designer who has been writing about interior design, home decor, and architecture since 2012.

Complement natural materials

Amy chose a punchy wall color, Glidden Black Onyx, for her home office...AKA her craft room, and the choice couldn't have been better. That black slate palette allows all the primary colors in her crafty accessories to pop, and gives the space a bright, welcoming feel. Here's another awesome example of a black accent wall making a living room with a delicious, rich black accent wall in lieu of the TV being the star.

Bright, vibrant colors look fantastic, and give a beautiful “pop” against a black accent wall. Shades of white are a natural ally to a black accent wall, as are light shades of gray. Such a creative black painted feature wall created with inexpensive wood slats! I love the texture and dimension she created with these little trim pieces.

If interested to use bright, sunshiny yellow, you should select the right accessories and upholstery that will match it. A good guide could be the combinations used on patterned chintz and floral paintings. Another way to dismiss the doubt is to paint small areas at a time, and try to picture how the room would look when absolutely black. This Harlem bachelor pad had a small foot print, but design firm Re-a.d used color where it counted, in this case an inky shade all over the upper and lower kitchen cabinets. Pairing that paint with the neutral palette chockful of natural fibers and texture is such a rich, winning combination.

Another example of how a black accent wall in a bedroom directly behind the bed can introduce such an impactful statement! Here, Liz from Within The Grove adds a feature wall painted in Iron Ore by Sherwin Williams. Black rooms are bold, elegant, and timeless, so using the shade liberally when decorating is just good feng shui. In fact, black walls are a goof-proof way to make any room in a home impossibly chic, regardless of square footage. Warm, soft lighting works best with a black accent wall, creating a cozy and inviting atmosphere. Strategically placed lamps or wall sconces can highlight the wall’s texture and color, while adjustable lighting allows for mood changes.

On the other hand, opting for darker flooring, such as ebony-stained wood or deep charcoal carpeting, can intensify the cozy and cocoon-like atmosphere in the room. The synergy between the dark floor and the black accent wall fosters an enveloping ambiance, making it ideal for spaces with desired warmth and intimacy. Select mirrors featuring decorative frames that harmonize with the room's decor, infusing a hint of glamor and refinement. These reflective surfaces amplify the room's aesthetic, creating a captivating interplay of light and shadow against the bold canvas of the black accent wall. To prevent the room from feeling overly dark, introduce furnishings and decor that offer a striking counterpoint. The black accent wall is a powerful canvas, allowing you to craft a visually compelling and balanced design that captures the room's essence.

Positioned just behind a headboard, this wallpaper creates depth while framing the bed. Here, the graphic black-and-white print is strategically applied to a sliver of the wall and ceiling to highlight the centered bed frame. Set against clean white walls and bedding, it’s incredibly eye-catching and effective.

While the idea of a black accent wall might seem daring to some, this audacious choice has gained traction in the design world. The power of a black accent wall lies in its ability to create a focal point, set a mood, and infuse a room with an unmistakable air of refinement. While using black as a dominant color throughout a room may seem daunting to some, harnessing its power as a black accent wall can be a game-changer for your interior design.

Receiving a knife wound in the process, Dalton visits a hospital and befriends Dr. Elizabeth Clay to whom Wesley is also attracted. After sending his henchmen to unsuccessfully try to disrupt business at the Double Deuce, Wesley offers to hire Dalton himself. Dalton refuses and Wesley uses his connections to prevent the Double Deuce from purchasing alcohol from any suppliers.

Cast

While filming a weigh-in scene, Gyllenhaal flexed his muscles for the audience and got into a scripted, physical altercation with Hieron, who plays his rival in the action flick.

Reboots & Remakes

10 of 5,001 Norwegian Singles Cruises Reviews

These rooms for one are in limited supply, so they can be priced at a premium and sell out quickly. As on dry land, activities are often the best way to meet people on a cruise. If water sports are your thing, book a tropical cruise with a schedule of shore excursions that involve snorkeling, surfing, scuba diving and similar activities. Choose tours focused on wildlife watching, historical sites or food and beverage to meet shipmates who enjoy the same. Norwegian cruises are very popular with singles in their 40’s with a wide range of activities and entertainment and similar age group onboard. While the older smaller ships might be preferred by some travelers, they don’t tend to have single cabins and studio lounge features.

The Norwegian Prima features a 10 story free fall dry slide, a 3 level Go-Kart track, a virtual gaming complex. Such revolutionary entertainment activities allow for an exhilarating experience of the high seas. Moreover, the cruise line owns a private island in the Bahamas by the name of Great Stirrup Cay, which is exclusive to guests aboard NCL’s cruises.

The large casinos offer yet another opportunity to meet other singles on board — particularly at the table games. Margaritaville at Sea is another line to consider with plenty of gambling singles on board. A warm-climate Royal Caribbean cruise with your best buds can be an ideal option for the over-30 set. We recommend one of the line's newest and biggest ships so you have plenty of options for food, entertainment and hangouts to try. The price is right, there's plenty of onboard fun designed for this age group (great live bands, nightly karaoke, poolside games, trivia and deck parties).

ADDITIONAL STATEROOMS

Concierges in the major hotels and restaurants are usually fluent in English, and most waiters usually know enough to take an order from an English menu with some pointing. Since English is taught in schools, most young people are comfortable with the language, and like to practice on tourists. The Czechs are very friendly, and will be delighted if you try such basic words as Hello (Ahoy) or Thank you (Dekuji; DICK-kwee).

I took my first solo cruise on Norwegian Cruise Line. After 5 nights, here are the pros and cons of cruising alone.

Posted: Mon, 10 Jul 2023 07:00:00 GMT [source]

There were not a whole lot of cons to this trip except for what I personally considered to be a rather big one. Whether it be family or friends, I would have loved to cruise with someone else, as it would have been exciting to share all the memories and experiences with another person. After finishing my breakfast at the hotel, I booked another Uber to take me from the hotel to the cruise port. This process was very easy and seamless, and I arrived to the cruise terminal rather quickly. Single retirees with the freedom to enjoy longer and often more expensive cruises have loads of options for meeting people. The list starts with premium lines like Holland America, Oceania and Cunard, but also Viking and Princess Cruises.

The larger ships with more attractions tend to be most popular with this age group. These include fun activities like laser tag courses, go-karting, and virtual reality games. While I would definitely entertain the idea of doing a solo cruise at some point again in the future, I still think that I would rather travel with someone when given the chance. However, I really did enjoy this experience overall and would absolutely consider a solo cruise with Norwegian again. This trip did help to build my confidence when traveling alone, and I now feel that when it comes to future trips I will be even more equipped.

Here are some great singles cruises for various age groups to help you get started. Pricing will vary with destination and demand but will be cheaper than having to pay the single supplement for a traditional double occupancy room. Studio cabins are a hot commodity and are usually snatched up early, and the new solo rooms will likely be equally popular. Although Norwegian's existing studio cabins are small — around 100 square feet — they are ideally designed to maximize storage space.

From dressy dinners to the moon's glow on the ocean waves, cruising can feel like a setting straight from a Hollywood film. Though not as simple as swiping right, cruising to meet other singles has appeal. The line's newer Edge Class ships have a younger, hipper ambience than their older ships. Think martini bars, foodie havens and jazz clubs, all with decor that looks nothing like your parents' cruise ships.

This liner owns the top 5 largest cruise ships in the world, each of which can carry a minimum of 5,000 passengers. These maritime behemoths offer the most diverse range of entertainment activities imaginable. Rock walls, escape rooms, laser tag, indoor skydiving, and water slides are just the tip of the iceberg. In terms of variety, there is no other cruise that matches the amenities and excursions of this cruise liner, which is what helps it secure the top spot as the best cruise line in the US. Carnival offers highly budget friendly cruises and is by far the industry leader among all cruise liners.

Norwegian makes it easy by taking the stress out of traveling and giving you plenty of well-deserved "me" time as well as introducing you to people you normally would not have met. As a women traveling alone, or any individual traveling alone, there is always some level of concern about safety; however, I never felt unsafe once on this entire trip! In fact, I would argue that when it comes to methods for solo traveling, I personally think that cruising is one of the best ways to see the world by yourself.

Even if you don't think you enjoy time by yourself, experiencing a Bahamas cruise on your own (or with whomever you happen to meet) is nothing but luxurious. You can take the time to rest, relax, and soak in the sun or party into the wee hours of the morning! Solo travelers can also expect to pay less than a traditional double occupancy room. If you book do book a double-occupancy room, you will have to pay double the fare, but you’ll only pay for one person’s port fees, taxes, and gratuities. The video below highlights the experience of a solo cruiser (La Lido Loca) in a Norwegian studio cabin. The Studio cabins are designated their own exclusive area of the ship for which guests need a key card to gain access.

For senior singles cruises, all the previous options are still reasonable choices. The caveat is that cruise lines that cater to mature travelers are often targeted at couples, with solo travelers skewing older. Norwegian Cruise Line is easily one of the best cruise lines for solo travelers. The combination of solo cabins and flexible and informal onboard experience make them an enjoyable and relaxing experience for many. We loved how easy it always was to find a seat for nighttime shows, a deck lounger near the pool, a spot to sit at the buffet restaurant (even during peak times) or to get a reservation at one of the specialty restaurants. Crown Princess deck plans include six room-only decks (Emerald, Dolphin, Caribe, Baja, Aloha and Riviera), four of which are sandwiched between other room-only decks, allowing for quiet nights in a large percentage of the cabins. Additionally, two other decks (Plaza and Lido) offer a mix of public spaces and cabins, but even then, guest staterooms are all located within their own section, which effectively blocks off the noise in most of them. Crown Princess Alaska sailings are hugely popular among those seeking a somewhat less over-the-top experience as that offered by larger cruise ships. The vessel has a lot going for it, including great deck layouts, tons of dining options, and itineraries that include Glacier Bay. However, sister ship Discovery Princess, which debuted in 2022, has drawn much praise, too.

Alaska Bear Quest: A Photo Pro Expedition, Homer to Kodiak Itinerary

You are about 30 minutes to the most visited North Georgia vacation hotspots. From the town of Blue Ridge to Helen Georgia there is so much to see and do that everyone will have a fantastic time. Relax with a cup of coffee or glass of wine with amazing views and fresh forest serenity or enjoy activities with family and friends, such as pool, darts, foosball, arcade, fireplace, or walking paths in the woods. I always make a point to stop in at the various shops near the family beach to see the Castaway Cay merchandise. On a recent trip, the shops had everything from spirit jerseys and T-shirts to Christmas ornaments and swimsuits. This peaceful chair-lined beach is a quiet spot away from the family beach, where I can sit back and enjoy the view or take a chair down to the water and let the waves crash over me.

An AdventureSmith Specialist is 1 of only 8 passengers on this Katmai bear viewing cruise in Alaska. See his incredible grizzly bear photography and read stories of the bears in this detailed trip review. This 13-day land-and-sea adventure focuses on photography and begins in Kodiak and ends in Homer, adding to the highlights of the cruise-only itinerary with unique time spent in Lake Clark National Park and a day boat tour of Kachemak Bay. For safety reasons, it is not possible to split the group, for individuals to return to the ship early, or to stay in one place while the rest of the group moves. Transfers between the ship and the float plane, and to the smaller skiff used to access bear viewing locations, require the ability to make a large step up or down onto an unstable surface. Depending on the weather and flying window, you have one last chance this morning to photograph the bears of Lake Clark National Park, admiring their majesty and whimsy alike.

Alaska Bear Quest: A Photo Pro Expedition, Kodiak to Homer Itinerary

Several morning activity options are available in town, and your Kodiak guide can offer great suggestions. A moderate level of physical fitness is required for this small ship-based Alaska adventure, as it involves watching grizzlies on foot in open areas. At times, travelers must walk at least two miles to reach the daily bear-viewing location, in varied conditions including rough, uneven terrain, shallow water, and through mud while wearing chest waders (which can feel a bit awkward and uncomfortable). Transfers between the Ursus and the floatplane to the Zodiacs used to access the shore require the ability to make a large step up or down onto an unstable surface.

Visitors to the town harbor frequently see fishing boats unloading their catch—Homer is heralded as the Halibut Capital of the World. Depending on your arrival time, you might tour a local family homestead and artist studio, and/or take a walk along the long, sandy strip of Bishop’s Beach and Beluga Slough. When the tide is out, you can investigate the tidepools in search of small sea life including jellyfish and crabs. Once you’re settled in to your weatherproof tent cabins, gather for an orientation followed by your first opportunity to photograph bears. ABOUT ADVENTURE BEARS

return to bear a dise cruise

These are some of the world’s most active brown bear mating grounds, with the season peaking in mid-to-late June. Against a backdrop of sheer-sided peaks rising above the green valley floor, the bears are sometimes near enough that you can hear them chewing their food and communicating with one another in woofs, purrs and growls. While bear activity varies according to the time of season and weather conditions, and you can never predict exactly what bear behavior you’ll witness, there’s always something riveting going on. You may get to photograph bears wandering the tide flats on Chinitna Bay, mothers with playful cubs, or animated mating activity.

And while bears are usually plentiful right in the vicinity of camp, you also go into adjacent Lake Clark National Park for added variety. The bears continue grazing, while some sows come into estrus, offering potential opportunities to witness complex and fascinating mating rituals. While salmon runs are unpredictable, the fish often begin congregating at river mouths by late July. As mating season winds down, many large nomadic males disperse while females and their cubs loll in the rich habitat. July encounters typically include intimate time watching infants nurse and families play and graze on sweet wildflower meadows. Next, you’ll cruise through Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve, which is renowned for its spectacular scenery, abundant glaciers, and equally abundant wildlife.

By now they are largely satiated and healthy, with thick coats ready for winter. Emergency medical evacuation insurance is mandatory for this trip, with a minimum recommended coverage of $250,000 per person. If you decline the operator’s insurance, then you must provide proof of third party insurance. Our partners at Travelex Insurance offer a variety of plans and policies to fit every trip and budget.

Since the bears are sated by this abundance, they see humans merely as part of the scenery, allowing you to move safely in their midst on guided outings, at times photographing them from just a few yards away. This 13-day land-and-sea adventure focuses on photography and begins in Homer and ends in Kodiak, adding to the highlights of the cruise-only itinerary with unique time spent in Lake Clark National Park and a day boat tour of Kachemak Bay. In June, the world’s largest coastal grizzlies converge to socialize, mate and feast from the sea. Long, warm days supercharge the rich marine habitat, with seawater flooding into glacial river valleys to create intertidal meadows where bears congregate.

This brown bear adventure requires a high level of physical prowess and mobility in terrain and conditions that can be difficult to navigate. Travelers must be able to step up into and out of floatplanes, and step into and out of small open boats in potentially unstable conditions. In order to maximize bear-viewing opportunities, you will spend long days ashore, sometimes returning late to the ship for dinner. You may spend several hours in essentially one spot with little movement, sitting on low buckets.

The Ursus (which means “bear” in Latin) cruises slowly along the coast, where coastal grizzlies, or brown bears, are often foraging for food. Begin mobile means cruising to wherever the bears are, following them from bay to bay depending on weather and sea conditions. Along the way, the friendly captain and staff of the Ursus ensure guests feel welcomed, safe and attended to. The plan is to have lunch in town, then board your plane, but timing is flexible in the event of weather contingencies—in which case you’ll explore more of Kodiak as you wait for clouds to lift. Once it’s time to fly, head west over Kodiak’s steep green mountains and across Shelikof Strait to the Katmai Peninsula, where the ice-crowned peaks of the Aleutian Range rise in a serrated spine behind the shore. The pilot is in radio contact with the Ursus, and soon you’re taxiing on the water to pull up alongside the ship. Exiting the plane, embark the vessel that will be your floating home for the next several days. The 73-foot Ursus was built as a deep-sea fishing boat called Time Bandit, which navigated the stormy Bering Sea in pursuit of the lucrative king crab catch. Its successor, the second Time Bandit, gained fame in the Discovery Channel TV series “Deadliest Catch.” The original boat was later transitioned for research use by the National Park Service and Alaska Department of Fish and Game.
